What Is Multi-Channel Recovery?

Multi-Channel Recovery is the coordinated use of smart payment retries, AI-written email, SMS, and AI outbound voice calls — orchestrated automatically into a single recovery plan built for each subscriber.
It's not four separate tools.
It's one AI payment recovery system that selects which channels to use, in what order, at what times — based on who the subscriber is, how they've engaged before, and what kind of failure occurred. And it stops automatically the moment the issue resolves, regardless of which channel resolved it.

THE PROBLEM

Running Separate Channels in Parallel Wastes Effort and Frustrates Subscribers.

Most platforms treat channels as independent: a retry schedule here, a dunning email there, maybe an SMS add-on through a separate tool. Each channel fires on its own logic, with no awareness of what the others are doing.

The result: a subscriber who already updated their card still gets a payment chaser SMS. A subscriber who answered the phone and resolved everything still receives three more emails. Channels that should work together end up working against each other.

01

Build the plan before outreach begins

Channel selection happens before the first message is sent.

After classifying the failure, enComm reads the subscriber's profile — their lifetime value, email engagement history, whether they have a phone number on file, whether they've opted in to SMS, and whether AI calling is enabled for the store. From this, a concrete, timestamped recovery plan is built. Every step, every channel, every scheduled time — determined upfront and visible in the dashboard before any outreach begins.

02

Each channel aware of every other

No channel fires without knowing what the others have done.

Email open rates inform whether a follow-up email is worth sending. A subscriber who opened the email but hasn't clicked gets a different next step than one who hasn't engaged at all. A subscriber with no phone number on file and no SMS opt-in gets an email-only path. Channels don't operate in isolation — they share context and build on each other's outcomes.

03

Stop the moment the issue resolves

Resolution through any channel cancels everything else.

When a subscriber updates their card, completes authentication, or accepts a retention offer — regardless of which channel prompted it — all remaining scheduled steps are cancelled immediately. No email goes out to someone who just answered a call. No call gets placed to someone who already clicked the payment link. The plan closes cleanly the moment the work is done.

FEATURES

Every Recovery Channel Working Together To Recover Failed Payments

Every channel is part of a single AI payment recovery plan — AI classifies the failure and selects the right sequence for each subscriber.
Smart Payment Retries

For soft declines, retries are scheduled at the most likely window for success — based on failure type, the subscriber's own billing history, their country's banking calendar, and their local timezone. Never retried within 18 hours of the previous attempt. Every retry shows a plain-English rationale in the dashboard.

AI-Written Email

Every recovery email is written by AI specifically for this subscriber, and this failure — not a template with a name dropped in. Subject lines, body copy, and tone are generated using the subscriber's name, product, tenure, failure reason, and prior outreach history. Delivery, open, click, bounce, and complaint events are tracked and fed back into the recovery plan in real time. Emails redirect customers to a branded recovery page for your brand from your own domain if configured.

SMS

SMS messages are sent via Twilio — from a shared toll-free number or a dedicated number for your account. Copy is AI-written per case. Subscribers who reply STOP are immediately opted out, and all remaining SMS steps are cancelled. SMS is used selectively — for low-engagement subscribers where email alone is unlikely to reach them, or in parallel with email for high-value hard declines on day zero.

AI Voice Calls

For cases where email and SMS haven't resolved the issue — or for high-value subscribers as an early step — enComm chooses AI voice recovery. The agent has a genuine voice conversation, can send a payment-update link to the subscriber's phone or email during the call, and can offer a retention deal on the spot. Calls are placed only within your configured calling window, in the subscriber's local timezone. Full recordings and transcripts are stored for every call.

One Recovery Plan. Every Channel Working Together.

enComm builds and runs a coordinated multi-channel recovery plan for every failed payment — automatically, within the guardrails you set.

OUTCOMES

More Revenue Recovered. Without Over-Contacting Subscribers.

Not from sending more messages — from sending the right ones, through the right channels, and stopping the moment the work is done.

When a case can't be resolved through any channel, it's flagged in the dashboard for manual follow-up. Every recovery interaction contributes to a single subscriber history, giving every future recovery attempt more context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Multi-Channel recovery and enComm.

Q What is multi-channel recovery for subscription businesses?
Multi-channel recovery is the coordinated use of payment retries, email, SMS, and AI voice calls — orchestrated into a single recovery plan built for each individual subscriber — to resolve failed subscription payments. Unlike single-channel or uncoordinated approaches, every channel is aware of what the others have done, and the plan stops automatically the moment the issue resolves.
Q Why is multi-channel recovery important?
Different subscribers respond to different channels. A subscriber who never opens email may answer a call. One who reads every email won't need an SMS. Sending the same channel combination to everyone wastes effort, over-contacts engaged subscribers, and under-reaches disengaged ones. A coordinated multi-channel plan reaches each subscriber through the path most likely to work for them.
Q How does enComm decide which channels to use for each subscriber?
The system reads each subscriber's profile before the first message is sent — their email engagement history, whether a phone number is on file, SMS opt-in status, lifetime value, and the failure type. From this it builds a concrete plan: the specific channels, in the specific order, at the specific times most likely to result in recovery.
Q Does every recovery case use all four channels?
No. Channel selection is specific to each subscriber. A subscriber with no phone number and no SMS opt-in receives an email-only path. A soft decline from a highly email-engaged subscriber may only need a smart retry and a conditional email. Only cases that warrant it — typically high-value hard declines or low-engagement subscribers — use the full channel set.
Q Why does multi-channel recovery outperform email-only recovery?
Subscribers engage differently across communication channels. While some respond immediately to email, others are more likely to act after an SMS reminder, an AI voice conversation, or a smart payment retry. Multi-channel recovery increases recovery rates by matching each subscriber with the most effective recovery path instead of relying on a single channel.
Q What happens when a subscriber resolves the issue through one channel while another is still scheduled?
All remaining scheduled steps are cancelled immediately — regardless of which channel resolved it. No email goes out to a subscriber who just took a call. No SMS fires after the card has already been updated.
Q Is the outreach copy different for each channel?
Yes. Email copy and SMS copy are both generated by AI specifically for the individual subscriber and failure — not templates. Two subscribers in the same recovery archetype receive meaningfully different messages based on their name, product, tenure, and prior outreach history.
Q What compliance protections are built in for SMS?
Any subscriber who replies STOP to an SMS is immediately opted out. Their opt-out is stored, all remaining SMS steps in their active plan are cancelled, and no further SMS messages are sent to them from any future campaign.
Q Can I control which channels are enabled?
Yes. Each channel — email, SMS, AI calling — can be individually enabled or disabled from Recovery Settings. You can also configure calling windows, high-value thresholds, and per-store channel preferences. The system operates within whatever combination of channels you've enabled.
